Fetal monitoring is its own language. For nurses new to perinatal care, learning to read a strip can feel like deciphering something in an unfamiliar alphabet. Baseline, variability, decelerations, and the clinical decisions that follow require a foundation that goes beyond what most nursing programs cover. Without it, the monitor becomes a source of anxiety rather than a tool.
Language of Labor is designed to build that foundation from the ground up. This introductory course walks nurses through the fundamentals of electronic fetal heart monitoring in plain, accessible language, connecting the physiology of labor to what you see on the strip, and what to do about it. You will leave with a working mental model that makes everything else in perinatal nursing click into place.
This is not a certification course and is not affiliated with AWHONN. It is a starting point: the kind of grounding that makes the next step, whether that is clinical experience, AWHONN coursework, or advanced study, feel manageable rather than overwhelming.
